Willow River Yoga

Yoga is more than just an amazing workout and a series of poses, it’s a way of life. We will help you build a yoga practice both ON and OFF the mat. In our classes you will learn to unite movement with breath, how to properly align and move in a way that honors your unique body, and be shown a holistic way of life through the ancient, traditional teachings of yoga and its sister science Ayurveda.

Our Mission

It is our mission to make it known that yoga is for everyone. Our modern culture and fast-paced lifestyle keep us disconnected from ourselves and sick in mind, body, and spirit. We will help you connect fully with yourself, discover YOUR yoga practice and how to incorporate it into your life, and guide you towards healing and living a life where you will not just survive but thrive.

Why Yoga?

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj,’ meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite.’ As per Yogic scriptures, the practice of Yoga leads to a perfect harmony between the mind, body and spirit, between Man and Nature. Among the infinite benefits of yoga, you will improve your strength and flexibility, boost your immune system and metabolism, improve your energy and stamina, and reduce stress and anxiety.

  • “Patanjali’s eightfold system of yoga contains many elements used in modern treatments for anxiety: cognitive reframing, behavioral recommendations, relaxation techniques focused on breath regulation, mindfulness of sensory input, as well as methods for greater cognitive flexibility, concentration and downregulation of distress.”

As a mind-body practice, yoga allows people to become aware of the link between their minds and bodies in a way which can help them become less anxious. For example, shallow breathing may contribute to a heightened stress response, or repeated patterns of behavior might ultimately worsen overall anxiety (for instance, relying on alcohol to calm down). Yoga increases mind-body awareness, as well as offering a form of relaxation which can replace unhealthy coping mechanisms.

  • Yoga requires a surprising amount of strength, which is important to help prevent injury and make everyday tasks easier. We increase our strength through repetition and holding poses. We are essentially “weight training” in certain poses by supporting our own body weight in gravity. Over time, we gain more flexibility by practicing yoga regularly and consistently in order to build muscle memory.

  • In our modern world, our bodies tend to spend a lot of time in our “fight or flight” sympathetic nervous system. This causes stress and inflammation and dramatically lowers the immune system. When we tap into our “rest and digest” parasympathetic nervous system through poses such as twists, inversions and backbends, we give our immune system a boost.

  • A strong yoga asana practice can help build muscle and breathing fully and deeply increases circulation, both of which can dramatically boost the metabolism.

  • Moving your body in a sustained and focused way clears stagnation, removes blockages to the flow of energy, and boosts your endorphins.

About Julie the owner of Willow river yoga

About Julie

There was a time not long ago that I was heartbroken, grief-stricken, and sick. My oldest son, Danny, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, and my whole world shattered in an instant. I was lost in the dark. But I found that when I was able to drag myself to a yoga class, it was the only place where I felt any sense of peace. I soon went on a quest to learn as much about yoga as possible, and found myself enrolled in Yoga Teacher Training through Devanadi School of Yoga and Wellness, with absolutely no intention whatsoever of becoming a yoga teacher! By the end of my training, I had not only learned about yoga and its sister science Ayurveda, I had also rediscovered myself and found a whole new understanding of life and death. I had found my passion and a deep desire to help others on their own healing journeys.

About Willow River Yoga

Willow River Yoga provides classes, workshops, and retreats in western Wisconsin and the greater Twin Cities metro area. We provide a safe and supportive community to learn about the practice of yoga and its sister science, Ayurveda. We believe that yoga is for everyone. We strive to instruct our students in a way that is easy to understand, and to help you learn to listen to and connect with your body. There is SO much more to yoga than just the workout. In every one of our yoga classes, we incorporate asana (movement), pranayama (breathwork), and meditation.

Why I Started Willow River Yoga

Willow River Yoga blossomed from my Karma Yoga Project during my Yoga Teacher Training. According to Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, Karma yoga is the spiritual practice of "selfless action performed for the benefit of others." It is a path to reach moksha (spiritual liberation) through work. For my project, my aim was to help my cousin who lived out of state and was struggling with addiction by teaching virtual yoga classes to him and members of his Narcotics Anonymous group.

I was soon teaching other virtual classes to friends and family who were dealing with everything from addiction, to grief and loss, to stress and anxiety. And Willow River Yoga has continued to grow from there. I am called to help others find healing through the practice of yoga, just as I did. Karma Yoga is and will always remain an integral part of our business philosophy.
